Notable performance in Belgium of Specialized-Alberto Contador Foundation Team

Iosu Angoitia achieved a great victory which crowned the first experience abroad of the Specialized-Alberto Contador Foundation Team, who just finished a tour of three races in Belgium. Jose Luis de Santos selected for the occasion six of his top riders, who didn’t disappoint in their voyage of discovery to the Central European biking mecca.

Those chosen for the occasion were Pablo Noriega, Diego Pablo Sevilla, Cristian Torres, Enric Mas, Iosu Angoitia and Alvaro Cuadros, who have met in Belgium one cycling very different that runs in Spain, with flat racing, short and very fast circuits where attacks are a constant, but in which they discovered that there have things to say, although they missed some climbs to give everything they have.

The first of three races was the Johan Museeuw Classic, where the great Belgian champion was his host and showed them in person Gistel circuit where the race was developed. Unfortunately, the fastest man on the team, Cristian Torres, suffered a fall that stopped him to do the sprint, but still Pablo Noriega was fourth in a group of 15 riders who came in front and where also traveled Diego Pablo Sevilla (8th) and Enric Mas (12th), thanks to them  the Specialized-Alberto Contador Foundation won the second place on team’s classification.

On Monday, the second race was run in Izegem, 19 laps on a circuit about 6 kilometers long.  On a flat course, the attacks happened from the start, always in a very fast pace. The race was decided at 30 kilometers to go, when a group of 15 units jumps in front with Enric Mas, Diego Pablo Sevilla and Pablo Noriega among them. Behind, however, jumped Iosu Angoitia with another rider, who managed to connect with the head, moment when the Basque of Specialized-Alberto Contador Foundation surprised and went solo.

Angoitia used the work of their peers from behind, which controlled all attempts to follow him, and held the lead until crossing the finish line alone, while Diego Pablo Sevilla was third.

The last of the three races was the Van Vlaanderen Trophy in Reningelst, scoring for the Junior Belgian Cup. On this occasion the sunny weather and summer day gave way to a typical cold, rainy and windy day that usually marks many of the races in Belgium, but even that prevented the good performance of the team of Jose Luis de Santos.

Over a more demanding circuit than the previous, without being really hard and along 12 laps, bad weather provoked no less than 96 abandons, out of a total of 185 riders at the start. After many attacks and counterattacks, the race was not decided until the final lap, in which a group of about 25 units was leading and from where was a break of six, among they Enric Mas and Cristian Torres. However, at 1 kilometer to go the six were hunted, so everything was resolved in a sprint in which Enric Mas finished fifth and Cristian Torres sixth.

The expedition of the Specialized-Alberto Contador Foundation returned today to Spain with a great taste, thanks not only to the victory of Angoitia and good results obtained by the whole team, but also to the great reception dispensed to them in Belgium especially with respect to Omega Pharma team members, who took care that the stay in his country was extraordinary for the whole team and took care of every detail.
