Not a second’s hesitation. “If there’s one rider who impresses me, it’s Mathieu Van der Poel, he’s a machine. And if I think of the time trial, which is a discipline that I like a lot and this year has been very good, I have to mention Filippo Ganna”. Alem Herráiz, a cadet who joins the U19 team of the Fundación Contador from the Unión Ciclista San Sebastián de los Reyes, has been one of the big names in his category in 2021 thanks to some very good results that have had their zenith in the national time trial title. The lanky Spaniard, who lives in the Madrid town of Daganzo de Arriba, is a relatively new cyclist. “This has been my first real cycling year. I started in 2020, as a first-year cadet, but the pandemic and COVID-19 barely let us do a couple of races. So 2021 has been a kind of debut and, looking back, it’s been a very good year,” he says. Herráiz took up cycling thanks to a friend, José Hernández, who had a saddle and encouraged him to give it a try. Time among friends. “At home I didn’t have any history related to this sport. José told me one day that why didn’t I go with him and I ended up leaving a road bike with him for almost a year. I had tried the mountain bike a couple of times before, but the skinny one gave me an amazing feeling from the very first moment and it didn’t take me long to decide that I had to try racing. I really like this world. It doesn’t matter if we are in different teams, outside the race the good vibes between everyone is something I really like. The atmosphere is the best”. The rider from Madrid, despite being a newcomer to the sport, does try to follow the day-to-day life of top-level competition. “It’s not that I look for specific races, I see what’s out there. I watch Eurosport. I like to watch the classics in their entirety, like the Milano-Sanremo, you see a lot of details, things catch your eye and you always learn. Among all the races, the one I like the most is Paris-Roubaix, it would be a dream to race it, although maybe I don’t have the ideal physical characteristics to race it because I’m not a heavy rider with the capacity to move a lot of watts for hours and hours. I am not the normal profile that you can see in this race. That’s why I say that I don’t see myself, although I would like to see myself”, he says with a smile.  Herráiz, who likes musical styles such as hip hop or trap (“sometimes it’s the rhythm that gets me, but most of the time it’s the message”, he says), is facing the final part of his ESO studies with a view to continuing with an intermediate degree, then a higher one and seeing what opportunities he can find, for the moment with the firm idea of combining it with an increasingly demanding competition in the lower categories. “From my point of view, people take it much more seriously from a younger age and have a much higher performance. I don’t think it’s wrong for people to jump into the professional categories at a very young age, it’s something that comes with each individual and there are people with a very good level, although I don’t think it’s wrong to live the experience of the U23 category”, he says. Asked about the origin of his name, Alem explains: “A work colleague of my mother’s was called Alain and she liked the sound of it, although not the exact spelling; that’s why they adapted it a bit”.
