Lucas Guillermo, seventh in Sodupe: “I really wanted to put on a bib again, especially in the Basque Country”

XLVII Trofeo Fundación / Torneo Euskal Herria
Sodupe – Sodupe (103,7 km)

Lucas Guillermo from La Rioja finished seventh this Sunday in the Trofeo Fundación de Sodupe, seventh and penultimate round of the Euskal Herria Cycling Tournament promoted by the Basque Federation and the Navarre Cycling Federation, an event in which Mateo Vierge won. The Trofeo Fundación is a historic event in the Basque-Navarre calendar, although it had not been held in the last two years.

“After not being able to take the start in the third stage of the Bizkaiko Itzulia, where I still felt the after-effects of having previously passed the COVID-19, and after a period without competing to recover well, I really wanted to put on a race bib again. And even more so in the Basque Country, which is where I grew up as a sportsman”, explains Guillermo himself.

“The race went very fast. In the end, the two passes through Menagaray and Humaran were fundamental. A breakaway formed that initially didn’t seem to be of any concern. When I saw that the gaps were big, I decided to jump out of the bunch and try with a couple of breakaway companions to get to the head of the race. In the end it wasn’t possible to catch him, but we did get enough to finish seventh and leave with a good taste in my mouth after my return to where I like to race the most, in Euskadi”.
