Antonio González finishes third overall at the Montaña Central
Vuelta a la Montaña Central
Stage 3: Pola de Lena – El Cordal (88,9 km)
Antonio González from Soria climbed onto the final podium of the Challenge Montaña Central de Asturias, which concluded this Sunday at the summit of the Alto del Cordal. The demanding climb in the Principality was won by Samuel Fernández García, with overall winner Samuel Fernández Heres, teammate in the MMR, coming with him. González finished six seconds behind.
On the final day, in the first third of which there were many attacks, a breakaway of four riders was consolidated, among which the youth team of the Contador Foundation counted with the presence of Miguel Ramos from Madrid. The quartet would ride with a maximum advantage of just over a minute, although they ended up neutralised with a view to the demanding finish.
Behind, EOLO-KOMETA rode together around the figure of the rider from Castilla y León and tried to harden their development with a view to the final climb, although a puncture of Marc Terrasa before the start of the climb conditioned the planned strategy. In an edition controlled by the MMR team, González had already confirmed himself as a podium contender during the second stage, in which the ascent to the Faya de los Lobos broke up the race.
Guillermo Gutiérrez, director of the junior EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team: “We leave behind a really demanding Challenge Montaña Central in which our team has been again at a good level. Antonio has taken a step forward in a race that suited his characteristics. In the first two stages, despite the numerous crashes that have affected us, Antonio, Marc Terrasa, Joel Díaz and David Gimeno have been visible. On the final day we wanted to work for Antonio and none of the riders hesitated to sacrifice themselves for that goal. Fortunately, none of the crashes had any consequences”.
